Earn Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs) plus Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs) or Elite Qualifying Segments (EQSs) on eligible-fare tickets to qualify for Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, Platinum or Gold status when you fly:
Plus, Full-fare Economy, Business and First tickets on American-marketed flights will earn EQMs at a higher rate – getting you to elite status faster.
You’ll be able to qualify for elite status in 2021 with adjusted Elite Qualifying Dollar (EQD), Elite Qualifying Mile (EQM) and Elite Qualifying Segment (EQS) requirements.
^For 2021, we’ll waive the EQD requirement to qualify for Gold, Platinum or Platinum Pro status if you spend $30,000 on net purchases with an eligible AAdvantage® credit card that post to your account between January 1 – December 31, 2021.
EQMs represent a percentage of the actual miles flown (including applicable minimum mileage guarantees) based on the airline and the booking code purchased.
AAdvantage® members earn a base of 500 EQMs for eligible flights under 500 miles on American and oneworld® airlines; 250 EQMs for eligible flights under 500 miles on Basic Economy fares for travel through December 31, 2020. Starting January 1, 2021, Basic Economy fares won’t earn EQMs, EQSs or EQDs.
To calculate final EQMs earned, the multiplier for airline and booking code flown is applied to this base.
EQMs don't include class-of-service bonus miles, elite bonuses, other participant miles, any other AAdvantage® bonus mileage, or miles obtained from BuyMiles or GiftMiles.
AAdvantage® Aviator® Silver MasterCard® cardmembers can earn up to 10,000 EQMs each calendar year. Earn 5,000 EQMs if you spend $20,000 on purchases and another 5,000 EQMs if you spend an additional $20,000 on purchases.
Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite® Mastercard® cardmembers earn 10,000 EQMs after spending $40,000 in purchases within the year.
EQSs are segments you earn on eligible purchased tickets for flights on American or partner airlines.
EQDs are awarded based on ticket price (includes base fare plus carrier-imposed fees, but excludes government-imposed taxes and fees) on American Airlines-marketed flights.
Flights marketed by oneworld® carriers will earn EQDs based on a percentage of the flight distance and the fare class purchased.

There are two timelines associated with elite status membership – the qualification period and the membership period.
Membership for elite status is valid from February 1 or the day you qualify, through January 31 of the following year
Since you begin receiving elite benefits immediately upon qualification, the beginning of your membership year is the day you qualify for your elite level. Then, when the new membership year begins, every elite member’s year starts over.
As an AAdvantage® Executive Platinum member, you receive a choice of rewards, including the option to choose up to 4 complimentary one-way systemwide upgrades upon qualification. You can also choose additional systemwide upgrades as a reward upon reaching 150,000, 200,000 and 250,000 EQMs.
For 2021, we’ve lowered the thresholds to 120,000, 160,000 and 200,000 EQMs.
If upgrade seating is available, you or any passenger you designate may enjoy confirmed upgrades to the next class of service at the time of booking on most Business and Economy Class fares when flying on American marketed and operated flights.
Executive Platinum members earn a 120% bonus, Platinum Pro members earn an 80% bonus, Platinum members earn a 60% bonus and Gold members earn a 40% bonus on top of base miles earned traveling with American and participating oneworld® airlines.
Fly a million miles with us and enjoy Gold status for the life of the Gold program, bonus miles and more.
The Elite Qualifying Dollar (EQD) requirement will be waived for the primary cardholder (“you”, “your”) for AAdvantage® Gold, Platinum, or Platinum Pro status for qualification in 2021 for elite status applicable to the year of 2022 if the member spends $30,000 (USD) on purchases on eligible Citi® AAdvantage®, Aviator AAdvantage® credit cards, or AAdvantage® credit cards issued outside the U.S. posted between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021. Member must also meet Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) or Elite Qualifying Segments (EQS) requirement to qualify for status. This offer may not be achievable based on the assigned credit line and ability to maintain that credit line.
Spend on purchases may be combined across all eligible AAdvantage credit cards to reach the $30,000 requirement to qualify for the EQD waiver. Partial waivers will not be applied to members if spending an amount less than $30,000. All Citi®/AAdvantage®, all AAdvantage® Aviator® and all AAdvantage® credit cards issued outside the U.S. are eligible.
Purchases, less credits, returns and adjustments, made with your Citi® AAdvantage®, Aviator AAdvantage® credit card, and AAdvantage® cards issued outside the U.S. that post to your AAdvantage® card account, between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021, and purchases made by authorized users on your account will count toward your qualifying spend.
For cards issued in the U.S., purchases exclude balance transfers, cash advances, checks that access your credit card account, items and services returned for credit, unauthorized charges, interest and account fees, traveler’s checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions).
For cards issued outside the U.S., to determine the correct spend towards the $30,000, dollars spent will be calculated using the AAdvantage “base” or “spend” miles (i.e. not counting bonus miles) earned and posted to your account, and then applying the mileage earn rate applicable to the type of AAdvantage card used by you to make the purchase. For example, if the credit card used has a 1:1 ratio of dollars spent to base miles earned and 100 miles were posted to your AAdvantage account, then you would be credited with $100 of spend towards the $30,000.
The ability to earn status as part of this promotion is a limited-time offer and is non-transferable.
